From music visionaries like Akon and Jillionaire to platform pioneers like Ev Williams, the list of creators in attendance at Elevate’s social on Tuesday May 21, 2019 was truly staggering. We opened the doors to Toronto’s most influential tech leaders for a night of music and drinks looking out onto the city skyline.
Here are just a few of the innovators and thought leaders at the event.
Major Lazer’s Jillionaire and Former Twitter CEO, Ev Williams, snapped a photo on the balcony early in the night. The entrepreneurs came representing two very different methods of assisting the modern creator with their newest ventures, Endel and Medium. Jillionaire’s Endel is giving electronic music a whole new meaning, using algorithmically-generated personalized audio environments to help users focus, relax, or sleep.
Meanwhile, Williams looks to deepen and diversify information sharing by giving readers and writers alike a public platform they can trust with Medium, the CEO’s follow-up to Blogger and a leading example of social journalism.
Elevate co-founder and CEO, Razor Suleman, and four-time Grammy nominee, Akon, grabbed some drinks from the bar and spoke about a bold new direction for the pop artist: cryptocurrency. The cleverly titled Akoin is possibly the most socially-conscious player in the industry, dedicated to stimulating African entrepreneurship by bypassing inopportune inflation and scarce banking services. The result? Movement toward global innovation and economic stability.
Over dinner, Director X – the stylish filmmaker behind music videos such as Drake’s Hotline Bling – discussed Popp Rok, a media production company with a slogan as bold as X’s visual style – “we create pop culture.” Popp Rok brings together innovative artists to push the boundaries of Canadian content, engaging in everything from music videos to feature films.
Others mingled through the night, with a guest list including Capital One president, Jennifer Jackson, and Decentral founder, Anthony Di Iorio. Jackson, an outspoken believer in self-advocacy and inclusivity in the workplace, joined us again following her thoughtful presentation on scaling leadership at last year’s tech fest. Di Iorio came as CEO of Decentral, a home for innovation, disruption, and decentralized technologies. The company created Canada’s first two-way Bitcoin ATM and has since gone on to lead the Canadian blockchain market.
Overall, this is one night that will go down in Elevate history and with September just 4 months away we’re officially counting down the days until Moonshots | September 20-26th in downtown Toronto. Consider this epic party just a taste of what we have in store for this year’s festival as our team has been working hard to secure the hottest names in tech and innovation and are so excited to share all that is planned.
